Lot of 2 Antique 1880's Czech reverse painted verre églomisé style glass floral miniatures. Tinsel paintings are reverse hand paintings on glass with crumpled or smooth metallic foil applied behind translucent and transparent areas. The entire back is then black japanned to protect it. When viewed in candlelight or gaslight, the effect is one of shimmering highlights.
The origins of tinsel painting are related to forms developed in Renaissance Italy, eighteenth-century China and France, and nineteenth-century Austria, England, and Germany. Floral imagery predominates, as botanical copy prints and stencils were often employed.
These are in absolutely beautiful condition, never having the left the card they has been sewn on to. The colors are true and bright, the detail incredible and the foil looks to be in remarkable condition. Made in the Czech Republic or Austria, these are commercial pieces made by a professional for export, possibly to Japan or China for use in lamps, furniture or wall hangings.
