16. 07. 2020, 16:13

We recently managed to aquire a wonderful 1930's catalogue from the A Mayer and Sohn company of Oberkreibitz-Schönfeld, a region of the former Sudetenland, the historical German name for the northern, southern, and western areas of former Czecholovakia which were inhabited primarily by Sudeten Germans.

A Mayer and Sohn were manufacturers of hand blown crystal glassware and were based in the Oberkreibitz-Schönfeld area, now known as the areas of Horní Chřibská and Krásné Pole. This area of the Lusatian Mountains was perfect for glass making with an abundance of water, trees for fuel and high quality quartz sand.

The first glassworks in Horní Chřibská was built at the beginning of the 15th century. The oldest known master glassmaker was Veit from the Friedrich family, who owned this glassworks until the mid-18th century. The Friedrich family contributed greatly towards the creation of the world-famous Bohemian glass (also called Bohemian Crystal). In pre-Hussite times they produced amazing works of vitreous art near Daubitz, nowadays called Doubice. During the 16th and 17th centuries, as a result of the family’s development of their glass factory in Oberkreibitz, today Horní Chribská, Bohemian glass art enjoyed its first heyday.

The Friedrich family owned the smelter in Horní Chřibská until 1689, and later a number of other owners changed in it, the most famous of which were the Kittels after 1724, who first rented the smelter from the Kinskýs and in 1767 Hans Josef Kittel bought it. The Kittels owned the smelter until 1828 and then passed it on to their heirs. After 1867, it was taken over by Franz Zahn, who began to use gas obtained from wood or coal to heat the furnaces. In 1882, the glassworks was taken over by Michel & Mayer, and from 1902 it was owned by the Mayers until the end of World War II. After the war, the smelter was in operation until 2007, when it was definitely closed.

This catalogue has beautiful images of hand blown glass vases, decanter sets, tableware sets, glass flower parts and glass chandelier arms. Below are copies of some the pages for you to enjoy
